Haider Fakher Iraqi, b. 1987

Overview

Haider Fakher (b. 1986, Baghdad) is an Iraqi contemporary artist whose practice draws on the cultural heritage, collective memory, and visual traditions of his homeland. He earned a Diploma in Fine Arts in 2007 and a Bachelor's degree in Painting from the College of Fine Arts in Baghdad in 2012, before pursuing postgraduate studies in Painting at the University of Tehran. Trained in classical realism, Fakher gradually developed a distinctive artistic language that brings traditional Iraqi imagery into dialogue with contemporary abstraction and expressionism.

His paintings explore the symbolism of folklore, ancient architecture, and popular beliefs, transforming familiar cultural elements into layered visual narratives. Through textured surfaces, earthy palettes, and gestural mark-making, Fakher constructs compositions where fragments of calligraphy, geometric forms, and architectural details emerge and dissolve. His expressive handling of paint, shifting between dense layers and spontaneous lines, gives the canvas a sense of history and movement, as though memory itself were embedded within its surface.

Fakher has exhibited across Iraq and internationally, including presentations in Jordan, Lebanon, Iran, and Japan. His exhibitions include Talisman (2019) in Baghdad and Tithkar (2025) at Orfali Gallery in Amman. His work reflects an ongoing exploration of the relationship between tradition and modernity, preserving the visual traces of Iraqi identity while reimagining them through a contemporary artistic perspective.
