Alaa Sharabi SYRIAN, b. 1988
Alaa Sharabi (b. 1988, Syria) is a contemporary artist who uses glue & sugar, to symbolize the complexity of existence. Much of his work tends to be nostalgic about a time more comfortable yet grapples with a more uncertain time ahead, exploring themes of identity, displacement, and the human condition.
He seamlessly combines the old medium of printmaking and paintings using extreme techniques that engender both chaos and order. Filled with erratic lines, thick strokes & abstract images, he draws the human inside out, addressing inner conflicts, self, and memory as a struggle.
His work is a philosophical exploration of what it means to exist in a constantly changing world. He explores the tensions between past and future, distributary and ordered, hope and uncertainty.
